On October 20, 1977, the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd experienced a tragic plane crash in Gillsburg, Mississippi. The crash resulted in the deaths of six people, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray.
The band's chartered Convair CV-240 aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed into the swampy woods while en route to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for a concert. The survivors, including several band members and crew, suffered serious injuries.
